This episode is a little different, and it closes Season 1 of The NextDrop Question.
Most conversations in this series focused on water, contaminants, wastewater, treatment, utilities, PFAS, biofilms, digital monitoring, and practical environmental decisions happening now.
For the final episode of the season, I wanted to zoom out.
Really far out.
I spoke with Hesham Sallam, Professor of Vertebrate Paleontology at Mansoura University and founder of the Mansoura University Vertebrate Paleontology Center.
The question behind the episode was intentionally unusual: what would “emerging contaminants” or environmental stress look like 100 million years ago?
Hesham helped make that idea real.
We discussed how paleontologists reconstruct ancient environments using fossils, rocks, sediments, chemistry, CT scans, microscopes, chemical analysis, and computer tools. These methods help scientists understand what ecosystems looked like, how climates changed, and how ancient life responded to disruption.
We also talked about natural toxic events before humans existed. Ancient oceans could lose oxygen. Harmful substances could spread through water. Tiny fossil organisms could show unusual shapes, similar to deformities observed today in polluted environments. These records remind us that Earth has a long history of environmental stress, ecosystem disruption, and recovery.
The past does not give us a simple prediction of the future. But it gives us a longer record of how life responds when multiple pressures happen together.
That made this a fun and thoughtful way to end Season 1.
